Sophie Ferretti

Sophie Ferretti joined JAMaROO Kids as a part-time San Francisco-based teacher in the Spring of 2026, bringing with her over 10 years of experience of working with preschool and elementary-age children.

Sophie first began working with children in high school, while she regularly babysat. Her love of nature and desire to travel eventually led her to take a gap year in Indonesia, where she volunteered with a program focused on human and environmental health. During her time there, she helped collect data in the old-growth forests of Western Borneo, assisted in local elementary classrooms teaching children about nature and the environment, and supported creative projects for a local NGO.

Sophie enrolled in Environmental Studies, Latin American & Latinx Studies at UC Santa Cruz. While completing her studies, she worked on the campus farm and as a nanny before becoming a preschool teacher at a Waldorf-inspired childcare and preschool in 2016, where she spent 5 years. After graduating, Sophie moved to San Francisco, where she worked as a preschool teacher and later as an art teacher at a Reggio Emilia-inspired art and nature program. There, she worked with children ages 2–10 and explored a wide variety of artistic mediums and techniques. In 2023, Sophie traveled to Reggio Emilia, Italy, where she completed an extensive teacher training at the Loris Malaguzzi Center and visited schools throughout the area. The experience was deeply inspiring and transformative, both for Sophie as an educator and as an artist.

From an early age, Sophie was immersed in creativity, nature, and the arts. She grew up in an artistic family, with a visual artist mother, a musician father who plays the trumpet, and grandparents and family members who were also involved in music and dance. Her father was even the music teacher at her elementary school, giving Sophie a rich musical upbringing from a young age. As a child, Sophie loved creating imaginative worlds and characters using a variety of art mediums and found materials. Her curiosity and passion for creativity have continued throughout her life, making her a self-proclaimed “hobby hopper!”

Sophie’s creativity extends far beyond the classroom. She began taking metalsmithing classes in 2022 and now works as a Beginner Fabrication teacher for adults at a local studio, primarily working with silver, brass, and copper. She is also revisiting the ukulele and guitar so she can incorporate them into her classes.

When Sophie isn’t teaching, she can often be found diving into a new art project, writing in her journal at a local café, taking yoga or line-dancing classes, exploring San Francisco’s parks and beaches, or spending time with friends and loved ones. 

When Sophie was asked what she loves about working at JAMaROO Kids, she responded with, “I love seeing the joy and excitement on children’s faces when singing a song they love, or hearing their laughs when dancing around or when teachers/peers say something silly! I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be playful and present with children. I am also constantly inspired by children’s art and their uninhibited creative ways of being.”
